BASKETBALL AUCKLAND

BASKETBALL AUCKLAND

Basketball Auckland (BA) is a regional association dedicated to promoting and developing basketball activities in Central Auckland. Founded in 2004, BA was established through the amalgamation of the Auckland Women’s and Men’s Basketball Associations. With guidance from Sport Auckland and a newly formed board, BA rapidly expanded its operations until 2012. At that time, BA partnered with Counties Manukau Basketball (CMBB) to create Auckland Basketball Services Limited (ABSL), a limited liability company designed to deliver shared basketball services across the Auckland region.

In 2016, the organization grew further with the addition of Waitakere-West Auckland Basketball Incorporated (WWABI) as a partner. Today, ABSL is co-owned by BA, CMBB, and WWABI, each holding an equal 33.3% share. This ownership structure aims to strengthen the unity and voice of Auckland’s basketball community.

ABSL and Its Role

ABSL, which operates as Basketball Auckland’s management company, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the association. It is dedicated to delivering a broad range of basketball services and increasing basketball access throughout the Auckland area. ABSL’s responsibilities include organizing playing opportunities for all ages and levels, from junior school and club basketball to competitive and social adult leagues. Additionally, ABSL supports the development of coaches and referees and offers volunteer opportunities, promoting a comprehensive growth approach to the sport.

Basketball is widely popular across Auckland, appealing to various ethnicities and both genders, with versatility for both indoor and outdoor play formats. Through ABSL, BA collaborates with other regional associations to ensure cohesive community programs, leagues, and development pathways, contributing to the sport’s sustained growth across the region.

Governance and Structure of Basketball Auckland

As the Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ) mandated association, BA is responsible for basketball delivery in Central Auckland. BA holds voting rights under BBNZ’s constitution and actively participates in BBNZ’s Annual General Meetings. BA also maintains one position on the ABSL board, although this role is subject to periodic review.

In summary, Basketball Auckland continues to play a vital role in Auckland’s basketball ecosystem, working in partnership with other regional bodies and ABSL to foster a thriving basketball community.

A message from BBNZ:

"It is the responsibility of the associations to ensure that the players who are attending the association's trials are eligible to represent your association... In 2025 [and beyond] BBNZ will be taking a very hard line on any breaches of the eligibility rules and regulations and will be imposing fines as required."
